Chikanobu is considered perhaps the last great Ukiyo-e artist. This series depicted beautiful women in traditional garb from various epochs of Japanese history. This player of the traditional Japanese instrument is from the Kanei era (1624-44). In the upper inside panel, attendants are shielding the mother and child with a parasol.
