Nabeta Gyokuei was a pupil of the famous Toyohara Chikanobu and was considered a master of fuzokuga genre painting. He was also known for his fan designs, and produced woodblock prints for the noted Kaibutsu Ehon (“Illustrated Book of Monsters”). The book depicted different types of yōkai, creatures from Japanese folklore. In this unusual design, a quiet, Chinese-influenced landscape is juxtaposed with dramatic, oversized Kanji.
