Charles W. Bartlett (1860–1940)
One of the most prominent Western artists to embrace Japanese culture and become a force in Shin Hanga, Charles William Bartlett was an English painter and printmaker. He traveled widely and, in 1915 in Japan, met Watanabe Shozaburo, the father of Shin Hanga and who had in his stable of artists Kawase Hasui. Watanabe published 21 woodblocks from Bartlett's designs in 1916, including six prints of Japanese landscapes.
