Kiyoshi Kobayakawa (1899-1948)

Here was a designer of beautiful women prints who came to depict the “modern women” who were the craze of Tokyo in the 1930s. Kobayakawa Kiyoshi was born far from Tokyo in Fukuoka, but his designs have come to define the Metropolis of that era and how it had so dramatically thrown off the shackles of old-time Edo. Perhaps his most famous print is “Tipsy.”
