In this clamorous, mother-and-children-packed triptych by Utagawa Kuniteru, we see a lively rehearsal for a musical performance in the famous Yushima teahouse. Children who have rigorously studied their instruments for years will finally get to demonstrate their skills.
We see many little vignettes. While some students run through their songs on the far right, others warm up on their shamisens and drums or change into their performance outfits. On the left sheet, near the teashouse railing, a mother helps her daughter with her obi sash. Nearby, we see a few little ones curiously gather around an ukiyoe woodblock print within this ukiyoe woodblock print.
Parents who’ve ever attended their child’s performance knows the mix of excitement, anxiousness and pride that arrives on the big day. So rehearsal is crucial. And lots of it. Same now as it was then, across centuries and cultures. Somehow Kuniteru captured it.
He also does a wonderful job juxtaposing the busy interior of the teahouse with the peaceful view outside, which, even though a small portion of the left sheet, includes some famous views. First we see Shinobazu Pond, the water stretching into the distance, and then the elegant cone of Mount Fuji, calmly watching over this very un-calm scene.
This print is an extraordinarily good condition.
1858年，歌川国辉画下了汤岛一场热闹的音曲“さらい”。所谓“さらい”，并不是普通的日常练习，而是学习音乐、舞踊等艺事之后举行的成果展示，类似今天的汇报演出。地点选在汤岛一家著名的料理茶屋，孩子、家长和师傅齐聚一堂，座敷里挤得满满当当。
既然是“さらい”，当然有人在认真表演。学习多年的孩子正在展示自己的成果，新入门的孩子坐在上座，面前还摆着带头尾的整条鲷鱼御膳。演出之外也没有闲着：有人忙着给三味线和太鼓的皮加热，有人正在换衣装，为接下来的表演做准备。
不过，并不是每个孩子都对演出那么感兴趣。有人忙着吃点心，有人凑在一起聊天，还有几个孩子干脆围着一张描绘浦岛太郎的浮世绘看了起来，似乎比眼前的表演更加吸引他们。大人们也没有急着制止，整个场面热闹，却并不拘谨。画中没有真正的主角，每个人都在做自己的事情：表演的表演，准备的准备，吃东西的吃东西，看画的看画。
热闹的座敷之外，却是另一番景象。栏杆外展开的是不忍池，水面一直延伸至远方，天际甚至还能望见富士山。室内挤满了人，室外却十分开阔；近处是孩子们的演出、点心与说笑，远处则是安静的水面和富士山。国辉没有只盯着座敷里的演出，而是把窗外的不忍池与富士山也纳入画中，热闹的室内与安静的远景就这样同时出现在眼前。
《汤岛音曲习演图》最吸引人的，或许正是它没有把这场活动画得过于正式。有人认真登台，也有人根本没在看；有人忙着准备下一场演出，也有人只顾着手里的点心和浮世绘。1858年汤岛的一场“さらい”，就在这些细小的日常中被记录了下来。
